Lapidary is the cutting and finishing of stones. For jewelry purposes, gemstones are generally either faceted, or cabochon cut. Faceted stones are usually transparent materials, and the many small polished surfaced make the stone sparkle from within and without. The stones will generally have a raised top, and pointed back, with patterns cut into both surfaces.
Cabochon cut stones have a domed or flattened top, and a flat back. The material is usually opaque, or darker in tone, thus limiting the advantage to faceting. A specialized form of cabochon cutting will inlay stone segments into metal settings, for a smooth, elegant appearance.
Occasionally, a stone becomes scratched, or chipped during the course of everyday wear, and it is necessary to re-cut, or re-polish the stone. Faceted stones will range from $80 to $300, depending upon the material, size, and extent of the damage. Cabochon, or inlay cut stones may cost from $40 and up, depending on the material and cut.
